If you like EVE Online, you will love Infinity: The Quest for Earth. It is still in development, but if it has just half of it's planned features, it will become the new Gold-Standard.

I was checking out the pre-alpha vids.. it looks pretty freaking cool, nothing I would play though... unless you were able to hop out of the ship and colonize the planet.

As a matter of fact, you can colonize planets. As well as building stations, mining outposts, and other things. You can't walk around outside your ship (possible in an expansion), but you can do just about everything else.
